Gary Abel, PhD

Contributing Scholar

Dr. Gary Abel is a Contributing Scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. He conducts technical research into biosecurity applications and risks of biological foundation models, and is exploring how to improve sequence screening and threat detection through AI-enabled molecular property prediction.

Dr. Abel holds a BS in physics and a PhD in chemistry and chemical biology. He spent a decade developing new methods for characterizing DNA, RNA, and proteins, before going on to lead an R&D team at PacBio that helped build and launch a DNA sequencing platform. In 2025 he founded Fourth Eon Bio, a research organization focused on adapting AI to improve biosecurity safeguards. He also serves as an advisory member of the Sequence Biosecurity Risk Consortium.
